This course explains how to read and understand a four-stroke engine timing diagram, with a focus on four-stroke diesel engines while also explaining principles applicable to petrol or gasoline engines.

Using a detailed simulation, the course walks through the suction, compression, ignition/expansion, and exhaust strokes and shows how piston movement, valve operation, fuel injection, and crankshaft position relate to one another.

The course explains important timing diagram abbreviations including IVO, IVC, FIS, FIE, EVO, EVC, TDC, and BDC, along with crankshaft angles and the 720-degree four-stroke cycle. It also covers fuel injection timing, valve overlap, scavenging, charge air, and the differences between naturally aspirated and supercharged engines.
