This course provides a detailed introduction to the bulbous bow, a hydrodynamic feature found on many modern commercial and naval vessels. Located at the forward-most section of the hull below the waterline, the bulbous bow is designed to reduce wave-making resistance, improve fuel efficiency, and optimize vessel performance.

You'll learn how ships generate bow waves, stern waves, and other wave systems as they move through water, and how these waves consume energy from the propulsion system. The course explains how a properly designed bulbous bow creates its own wave pattern that interacts with the vessel's natural bow wave, reducing overall resistance through wave interference.

Using practical examples, you'll explore the factors that influence bulbous bow performance, including vessel speed, hull form, displacement, and operating conditions. The course also examines the operational advantages of bulbous bows, such as reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improved motion characteristics.

By the end of this course, you'll understand the principles behind bulbous bow design, its benefits, limitations, and why it has become a standard feature on many large commercial vessels.
